Risk Assessment Description:

This checklist provides a practical, step‑by‑step guide for Gas Safe registered engineers to ensure safe installation, maintenance and testing of gas‑fired appliances, protecting occupants from carbon monoxide exposure.

Use this checklist for:

  • Pre‑service inspection of domestic and commercial gas boilers, heaters and fire‑place appliances.
  • Testing and commissioning after installation or repair.
  • Annual safety checks required by law.

How to use: Follow each question in sequence, confirming compliance with a simple Yes, No or N/A response. Record any observations, remedial actions and sign the record of inspection before leaving the site.

Carbon monoxide is a colour‑less, odourless gas that can cause serious health effects or death if not properly controlled. This checklist helps engineers identify potential sources of CO, verify proper ventilation, and ensure detection systems are functioning, thereby protecting occupants and meeting legal duties under the Gas Safety Regulations and Building Regulations.

Compliant with: Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, HSE guidance on carbon monoxide safety for gas appliances and Building Regulations Part J (Combustion Appliances). All work must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Engineers must retain records of inspections and any remedial actions for at least one year as required by the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 and the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. Failure to comply can result in enforcement action, fines, or prosecution.
