This working under a raised vehicle safety checklist is designed for vehicle technicians, mechanics and workshop staff in motor‑trade environments such as garages, body‑shops, MOT bays and recovery yards. It guides users through every essential step to safely lift a vehicle on a hydraulic jack, floor jack, trolley jack or axle stand before working underneath.

The checklist reflects the requirements of the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 and incorporates best‑practice guidance from HSE on mechanical repair. It covers planning, competence, the condition of lifting equipment, site conditions, personal protective equipment, collective safety measures and emergency arrangements.

Use this checklist for:

  • Pre‑use checks – confirm the lift set‑up, equipment condition and environment are safe before any work begins.
  • In‑process monitoring – verify that conditions remain safe while work is underway.
  • Completion / make‑safe – ensure the vehicle is safely lowered, the area is left clear and the lift operation is recorded.
