Risk Assessment Description:

This risk assessment template is designed for hotel banqueting and function service teams – from event coordinators and floor staff to kitchen assistants and service crew – who need a practical, compliant way to identify and control the hazards associated with setting up, serving and clearing large‑scale events within a hospitality venue. This template is fully editable and shareable, allowing you to tailor hazards, controls, and risk scores to the specific layout and service style of your venue.

The assessment covers the full event lifecycle: transporting and manually handling tables, chairs, glassware and catering equipment; setting up temporary structures such as marquees, dance floors and lighting rigs; serving hot food and beverages to large numbers of guests; managing crowd flow and occupancy; and the use of open flames or candles for decorative purposes. It also addresses the operation of electrical catering appliances, gas‑fired ovens, and the handling of sharp tools and heavy loads. Specific risks such as slips on spilled liquids, burns from hot trays, manual handling injuries, fire from decorative candles, and stress from high‑pace service are included.

Use this template to:

  • Identify event‑specific hazards before each function begins.
  • Provide clear, actionable control measures that staff can follow on the day.
  • Demonstrate compliance with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 where relevant.

Compliant with: Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974; Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992; Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998; Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005; Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002; and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

Each risk includes a brief description of the hazard, the persons at risk, initial likelihood and severity scores, a controlled likelihood score after applying the measures, and a set of practical control actions formatted as an HTML unordered list.

What's the difference between a risk assessment form and a risk assessment template?

A risk assessment form is the blank document; a risk assessment template is a pre-filled form ready to customise. Our generator gives you both - a free interactive form you fill in plus over 2500 pre-written templates you can customise to your specific workplace.

Do I need to create an account to use the risk assessment templates?

How many risks can I add to a single risk assessment?

The number of risks (hazards) you can include in one assessment depends on your plan: guests get unlimited risks, Free accounts unlimited risks, Standard unlimited risks, Pro unlimited risks, and Enterprise unlimited risks per assessment. Whenever there is reason to believe the assessment is no longer valid - after workplace changes, near-misses, accidents, new equipment, new substances, or new processes. HSE guidance recommends an annual formal review at minimum.

What is the HSE 5-step risk assessment process?

Step 1: Identify the hazards. Step 2: Decide who might be harmed and how. Step 3: Evaluate the risks and decide on precautions. Step 4: Record findings and implement them. Step 5: Review the assessment and update if necessary. Our interactive generator walks you through all 5 steps.
