Self‑order kiosks are now a core part of fast‑food and takeaway service, allowing customers to place orders and pay without staff assistance. While they improve speed, they also introduce three key safety challenges: electrical faults that can cause shock or fire, contaminated touchscreens that can spread bacteria to hands and food, and cables or liquid spills that create trip and slip hazards for both staff and customers.
Under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) the employer must ensure that work equipment is suitable, maintained and used safely. The relevant British Standard BS EN ISO/IEC 20071‑31 defines design and accessibility requirements for kiosk interfaces, helping to minimise user error and ergonomic strain.
To stay compliant, staff should perform a visual inspection of power supplies and cables at the start of each shift, clean the screen with approved disinfectant wipes at least hourly, and secure all cables with covers or clips away from walkways. Payment terminals must be tested for functionality before opening, and any software glitches should be reported immediately. When a customer has difficulty using the interface, a calm, hands‑on assistance should be provided to avoid rushed tapping and repetitive‑strain injuries.
This resource is fully editable and shareable, allowing each site to tailor the content to local procedures while maintaining legal compliance.
