Risk Assessment Description:

This vehicle jacking safety checklist template is designed for motor trade workshops, dealerships and body shops to ensure safe lifting of vehicles for inspection, repair or tyre work. It follows the requirements of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

Use this checklist for:

  • Pre‑use checks – confirm the vehicle, jack and stands are ready before work starts.
  • In‑process checks – verify conditions remain safe while the vehicle is lifted.
  • Completion checks – ensure the vehicle is safely lowered, equipment is stored and the area is clear.

Each item is answered Yes, No or N/A. Any No response must be resolved before work proceeds. The checklist covers risk assessment, competence, ground conditions, correct jacking points, equipment inspection, use of stands and wheel chocks, PPE, exclusion zones and emergency arrangements.

The appointed mechanic should complete the checklist on site, record any “No” answers and implement corrective actions before the lift continues. Completed forms are filed with the job record and retained as required by PUWER.

When a vehicle is lifted, ensure the area is continuously monitored and that a rescue plan is in place. After the job, store the jack and stands securely and keep the completed checklist with the vehicle service record for future reference.
