This vehicle diagnostic equipment safety checklist template is designed for motor‑trade workshops, dealerships and bodyshops to ensure diagnostic tools are safe, correctly calibrated and ready for use before any vehicle testing begins.

It aligns with the requirements of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and incorporates HSE guidance on equipment inspection, competence, work‑area safety, software version control and electrical protection.

Use this checklist for:

  • Pre‑use inspection – verify equipment, cables and software are fit for service.
  • In‑process verification – confirm safe operation while the diagnostic unit is powered.
  • Post‑use make‑safe – ensure equipment is powered down, stored correctly and records updated.

Before each diagnostic session the technician should verify that the equipment’s battery charge indicator is within the green range, that any attached OBD cables are correctly seated, and that the unit’s on‑board diagnostic indicator lights operate as described in the manufacturer’s manual. The checklist also serves as evidence for audits, supporting the maintenance of a current risk assessment and confirming that all control measures required by PUWER are actively applied.

Completed checklists are to be filed with the workshop’s health‑and‑safety records and retained for a minimum of twelve months, enabling traceability of any defect or calibration issue and facilitating continuous improvement of safe work practices.
