The checklist is designed for pre‑storage inspections, regular site audits and safety briefings, providing a systematic way to verify that the storage area meets legal and best‑practice requirements for the motor trade. It covers planning, risk assessment, ground conditions, stack stability, segregation of plant and pedestrian routes, fire protection, hazardous substance control, personal protective equipment and emergency provisions.

Key checks include verification of a valid risk assessment, clear signage, adequate lighting, ground load capacity, safe stack heights, use of tie‑downs, appropriate fire extinguishers, spill kits, fenced perimeters and the condition of plant and equipment used in the yard. The checklist also confirms staff competence, training records and that emergency procedures such as fire evacuation plans are in place and understood.
