Choose the background colour for the header on shared documents. Select a colour that complements your logo and brand identity.

Risk Assessment Description:

This checklist supports Gas Safe registered engineers, plumbers and heating specialists when responding to a suspected gas leak or emergency. It ensures that all statutory duties under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 and HSE “Gas industry unsafe situations” guidance are met, protecting people, property and the environment.

Use this checklist for:

  • Identifying and isolating gas leaks
  • Ensuring safe ventilation and removal of ignition sources
  • Verifying competence, PPE and emergency procedures before work starts
  • Confirming safe re‑commissioning of gas services after the incident

Fully editable and shareable – adapt the questions to suit your site’s specific hazards and procedures.

The checklist is intended for use at the scene of a suspected gas leak. Engineers should complete each item before commencing work, record responses, and retain the record as part of the incident file. It aligns with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and other relevant legislation, providing a clear, auditable trail of compliance and supporting safe re‑entry to the premises after the incident.

All completed checklists should be stored for the statutory retention period and reviewed during post‑incident debriefs to improve future response and training.

All personnel involved must hold a current Gas Safe Register qualification and be competent in using gas detection equipment, isolation valves and emergency procedures. Regular refresher training and competency assessments are required to maintain compliance with the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998.

Compliant with: Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, HSE “Gas industry unsafe situations” guidance.

What types of safety checklist can I create?

We are building specialist checklists across a wide range of subjects and industries — fire safety, workplace inspections, equipment and machinery checks, site inductions, vehicle checks, PPE, first aid and more. Browse by category to find the right one.

How often should safety checklists be completed?

It depends on the activity and your risk assessment — many checks are daily, weekly or monthly, while others are done before each task or shift. Completed, dated checklists provide a useful record of your monitoring.

Are the checklists a substitute for a risk assessment?

No. A checklist is a monitoring and inspection tool that complements your risk assessments and method statements — it helps confirm that controls are in place and working. Use them alongside your risk assessments.
