Health and safety legislation has saved thousands of lives. But for some it is synonymous with today's compensation culture. We are all familiar with what looks like a modern mantra of the damage: No cure no pay! Do you know someone who knows someone who once lived with someone who had an accident at work? You can pay for one! Agreed, this is an exaggeration. But apparently, with every ad break, we are bombarded by ads almost willing us to have an accident at work, so we can be rewarded with a windfall.

Health and safety has become big-money business. "Health and Safety has gone mad" is a phrase banded about so free that it has almost become accepted as truth, and there are countless comic classic examples to support this assumption. In August 2009, the Daily Telegraph reported that the Trade Union Congress was due to make a motion next month that "High heels should be banned from the workplace. The motion required a one-inch-maximum rule beaten on footwear workers. Submitted by the all-things-foot-Related Association of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, the motion alleged that high heels worn in the workplace can lead to any number of terrible feet and leg problems, and should therefore be eliminated.

Interestingly, the Union is composed of men. In the same spirit, a certain gray top tabloid could not wait to report that, in the name of the health and safety, Midlothian Council leaving the lights were switched on in a dilapidated school building so that if intruders were to go, they would be less inclined to do himself a harm because they could not see where they went. safety and health is still suffering bad press. And so, with such sensationalised, distorted and unrepresentative reporting, it may often seem that the purpose of health and safety law is to apportion blame and figuratively travel to the ignorant, instead of protecting.

This is not so. Quips For all jovial about health and safety gone mad, there remains the very real fact that there is much room for improvement. The Health and Safety at Work Act was introduced in 1974, at a time when an average of 651 people a year ago, a work-related death. In the years 2007 to 2008, this figure was at 228. The lowest figure for deaths since the law was adopted between 2005 to 2006, one years when 217 deaths. The figure seems to have been a plateau. Safety and Health is a minefield for an employer reaches, whether they employ five people or five hundred, in each sector, the transfer costs for construction.

But health and safety legislation is not really designed to appoint blame, and the government actively promotes guidelines which, if properly followed, will benefit the industry. Guidelines of the Government Health and Safety Executive (HSE) efforts to reduce the time and money lost due to absenteeism and sick leave, the company boost productivity and profits to increase staff retention and a reduction in insurance premiums and legal costs. A useful step – by-step guide of what an employer should do is available on the HSE website that lists all of the ratio of toilets to employees necessary to the interest of the employer's liability compulsory insurance.

The further understanding and training in the Health and Safety field, the more lives are saved. Oh, but be warned, you may not read about in the tabloids, because it would not be a very juicy story.
